SOCIAL SERVICES OUTREACH
Application Process and Eligibility Information
The Food Bank’s Community Outreach Coordinator helps people fill out applications for the following programs administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC):
SNAP (Food Stamp) Program
This nutrition program assists individuals and families with little or no income to buy the food they need for good health.
An individual or a family may be eligible for this nutrition program even if they own a home, live on the streets and don’t have a mailing address, or are children of undocumented immigrants if the children are citizens or legal permanent residents.
Information about eligibility and how to apply includes Income Guidelines and details provided by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at http://www.fns.usda.gov/SNAP/faqs.htm.
Women’s Health Program
Provides coverage for an annual family-planning exam and contraception at no cost for uninsured Texas women between the ages of 18 and 44.
TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)
Provides temporary financial assistance for families with children under age 18 while parents are seeking employment.
CHIP and Children’s Medicaid
Provides health insurance coverage for Texas children from low-income families. For information and an online application, visit www.chipmedicaid.org.
MEPD (Medicaid for the Elderly and People with Disabilities)
Provides care for adults age 65 or older, or disabled who need help with their daily activities in their home, or in a nursing home or other facility. Whether or not a person is “disabled” is defined and determined by the Social Security Administration or HHSC Disability Determination Unit (DDU).
Tarrant Area Food Bank’s Community Outreach Coordinator not only answers questions about benefit programs and helps individuals and families apply for them, but she also, upon request, delivers the completed applications to the appropriate Texas Health and Human Services offices.
