American Airlines Awarded One Year, One Million Meals Award from TAFB

At a special reception held on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Tarrant Area Food Bank awarded American Airlines with the first-ever “One Year. One Million.” Award. Cristina Castro, program manager, community engagement, corporate giving/citizenship, American Airlines, represented the international air carrier and accepted the token of appreciation presented by Bo Soderbergh, executive director, Tarrant Area Food Bank.

“It’s incredible to think that one company can make one million meals possible in a 12-month period, but that’s just what American Airlines has done,” said Soderbergh. “Nearly 500 American Airlines employees have volunteered for our food sorting, packing and distribution program in the past year. On top of that, American Airlines is a generous donor to our annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. Their combined efforts equal one million meals for hungry people in our community. We couldn’t be more pleased to have them as a partner and to present them with this award.”

In attendance were State Senator Konni Burton and her district director, Leigh Collins, Susan Young, district director for State Senator Kelly Hancock, and Tristeza Ordex-Ramirez, deputy district director for State Representative Ramon Romero.

Celia Cole, chief executive officer, Feeding Texas, delivered remarks around the issue of hunger in Texas and provided a comprehensive summary of Hurricane Harvey relief efforts across the state.

Some sixty guests enjoyed delicious bites prepared by Executive Chef Manuel Vasquez and 12 students in Tarrant Area Food Bank’s culinary training program.
