Popcorn Treats

Popcorn is a healthy whole grain. It is often thought of as an unhealthy snack because often too much fat and salt are added. Making treats yourself allows you to control the ingredients and is much cheaper than commercially prepared treats.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 5 cups popcorn, popped
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 1 cup bite-sized shredded wheat cereal
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (brown or white)
  • 1-1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions
 

  • Mix popped corn, raisins and cereal in a large bowl.
  • Drizzle melted butter over popcorn mixture.
  • Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small dish. Combine with popcorn mixture.
  • Shake or stir until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

  • Popcorn purchased in packages can have unhealthy oils. Read the nutrition facts label and avoid products with saturated fat and trans-fat. Also look for the word “hydrogenated” in the ingredient list, which indicates unhealthy fat.

  • Any whole-grain cereal may be used.
  • Other kinds of dried fruit may be used, such as dried cranberries or cherries
  • Experiment with other additions, such as low-salt pretzels or a few tablespoons of sunflower seeds.

  • Make a large batch and store in portion-sized sealed containers for quick snacks all week.
