What’s happening?
Late last year, the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus) was reported in China. Since then, the virus has spread across the globe, with more than 130,000 confirmed cases across 126 countries and over 5,000 deaths, causing the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic. In Tarrant Area Food Bank’s 13-county service region, the virus has caused schools to shut down and numerous Texas cities to declare emergencies as the number of cases continues to increase.
What are we doing about it?
Tarrant Area Food Bank’s top priority is the health and safety of the families and individuals we serve, food bank staff and volunteers. As such, we are closely monitoring the coronavirus pandemic and are actively consulting with the City of Fort Worth Health Department and county officials.
The need has just begun. We continue to provide food to people struggling with hunger across counties served by Tarrant Area Food Bank.
One of the most significant impacts of the pandemic has been school closures. Without access to school meals, children lose a consistent source of healthy food. As such, Tarrant Area Food Bank will continue to work with school districts to ensure children who rely on school meals have access to food outside of the classroom. Additionally, Tarrant Area Food Bank is preparing emergency boxes for distribution to our 330 local pantry and all school sites.
While it is still too early to determine the full economic effects of the coronavirus outbreak, Tarrant Area Food Bank and our agency partners are prepared to handle a potential increase in demand. We will continue to work to help people facing hunger have the food they need.
What can I do?
DONATE. As food becomes scarce on the shelves of grocery stores, it puts more pressure on the food bank to get access to resources. To make sure we can continue to procure and deliver food to all who need it, your financial support is crucial. Please give today to make an impact.
Thank you for your support during this time of greater need in our community.
